Birth of the Coffee Break

Boticelli’s “Birth of Venus” is itself reborn as “Birth of the Coffee Break”. I’ve had this painting in mind since the early days of coffee creations, so I’m glad to finally finish it. This original is 11×17″ and available, along with prints and greeting cards.

Well coffee fans, here comes another painting! Venus has just been born, emerging from the cold sea; what better time for a hot coffee? Her friends assist by blowing to cool it down a bit, and bringing a blanket to snuggle in. I will be completing this painting soon, along with the Tour de France one. Check back to see the results.

The ghosts you see here soon will become a boy handing a coffee to the racer, and 2 men watching from their table. Thanks for all your input and I’ll post the final version soon.

Tea as Paint! Test #1

I’ve always wanted to experiment with tea as paint. Hooray for color! This was a 20 minute project and I’m definitely excited by the potential. I’d love some feedback- do you know more colors of tea I should try? Is there a blue tea? How about a more black/gray tea?

In February I had a show up at Dudley’s Bookstore in downtown Bend, OR. Here’s the upstairs reading room area:

Last week I went to Seattle to hang coffee art in Irwin’s Bakery and Cafe and The Green Room. Irwin’s is a charming shop on 40th St. in the Wallingford area, with delicious homemade food as well as coffee. Stop in if you’re in Seattle; the show will be up through the end of March.

The Green Room is a green coffee bean storage facility. Almost all the coffee in the Northwest goes through this warehouse on its way to local shops and roasters. You can see some of the bean bags through the office windows.

Here’s a new painting in progress. I’m taking suggestions; should the biker be receiving a coffee from a bystander? Should there be a cafe table with people enjoying coffees while watching the race? Or should I just finish it as in the reference photo? Vote quickly and check back to see which idea won!
