READ MORE]]> I was honored to be chosen to do the poster art for Astoria Sunday Market this year.  People are familiar with my coffee art, especially Mona Latte, since a local restaurant bought a large framed print.  I figured I should do something with coffee, but an all-brown poster might not be colorful enough.  So it was back to my roots with watercolor for a combination coffee/color painting.  Here’s the almost done Market Mona; I’m looking forward to seeing the finished poster when the market folks put it all together.

“It is one of the three works of art most frequently parodied in advertisements and cartoons (the other two are Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and Michelangelo’s David.

 

In August 2004 the picture was in the news again after one version of it – Munch created four in total – was stolen in broad daylight from the Munch Museum in Oslo. The Scream is an irresistable trophy to art thieves. Another version was stolen in the early 1990s and recovered after an elaborate sting operation by Norwegian police and Scotland Yard.

Munch wrote ‘I was out walking with two friends. The sun began to set. I felt a breath of melancholy. Suddenly the sky turned blood-red. I paused, deathly tired and leaned on a fence looking out across the flaming clouds over the blue-black fjord and towns. My friends walked on and there I still stood, trembling with fear – and I sensed a great, infinite scream run through nature.’

Astronomers now speculate that the red sky he saw might have been caused by the 1883 eruption of the Krakatoa volcano.”

READ MORE]]> I just returned from a whirlwind trip to Dubai, United Arab Emirates.  I was invited to the Middle East Coffee&Tea Convention, to share my art and paint some prizes for the barista championship. Here I am lugging my tradeshow booth stuff past the world’s tallest building.

Dubai is a city of skyscrapers, impossible but real islands shaped like palm trees, indoor ski resorts, deserts, horse and camel races, excellent food and more giant malls than any place needs. Here are some highlights:


Dubai is new to the specialty coffee world, having mostly chains that any European or North American is familiar with. For my first coffee in Dubai, I wasn’t expecting much as I ordered a ‘flat white’ (perhaps what an Oregonian would call a ‘traditional cappuccino’) at the huge chain Costa Coffee, but was impressed by the great latte art!  Sipping it in the world’s largest mall, viewing the indoor ski slope, hearing the Muslim call to prayer over the loudspeaker, was a perfect way to start the trip. A different mall is extravagantly decorated in themes of Persia, China, and more.  Ever seen a Starbucks in a more glorious setting?


I chose my own subject for the coffee painting prize, and yet it turned out to be champion Matt Toogood’s favorite espresso machine!  The 2nd and 3rd place winners received paintings of latte art.

Here’s my booth:

The generous event organizers provided a delicious buffet every night at the 5star Meydan hotel, overlooking the racetrack where the world’s richest horse race is held.  Somehow I missed getting a photo of the 30+ choices of Indian and Middle Eastern foods.
A trip to Dubai is not complete without some crazy experiences.  On the same day, I got to swim in the warm, wavy, extra-salty Persian Gulf, then go snowboarding, and yes, it’s REAL snow.  I’m from a ski town in Oregon, but I must admit this little mountain wasn’t bad!  You never have to worry about poor conditions or sleet in your face. Maybe boredom with only 2 runs though.  I don’t know anywhere else on earth that you can be swimming in warm lovely ocean water and less than one hour later be skiing, but it’s a nice combination.

San Diego Beer Fair, here I come!  On September 24th, I’ll be painting live on behalf of Arts ‘n Drafts, ” an inspiration lounge ‘n libation studio where artists ‘n their adoring  public come for conversation, cult beverages, kinesthetic art, charity ‘n tasty morsels….ultimately to raise funds earmarked for programs that provide a direct and instantaneous impact on the lives of those they serve.   Our charities of choice support the lives of patients and their families suffering from Alzheimer’s, Cancer and Cystic Fibrosis; as well as members of the Military and At Risk Youth.”  The painting I create during the fair will be auctioned to support their charity work.  If you’re in San Diego, come out to the Fair and visit me!

READ MORE]]> The Fort George Brewery in Astoria, OR  gave me the pleasure of painting a chalkboard in their tasting room last week.  Astoria is a town of hard-working guys, with lots of fishing and logging.  I worked from a historical photo of loggers in a huge tree (sniff sniff, goodbye lovely tree!) and here they are enjoying beer from the Fort George.

This was part of the Beer Art show on display during August, and here are some paintings I created using their Working Girl Porter and Cavatica Stout as my paint.  If you’re near Astoria on a weekend, stop by the Fort George for some tasty food, beverages, and art!

It’s on a pier overlooking the mighty Columbia River in Astoria. Here’s what I saw as I worked on some new paintings…

Here’s another view, and my painting station.  Hearing the familiar coffeehouse sounds and drinking a fresh latte while I painted really felt good.  I’m sure I’ll be back for another delightful and inspirational experience.
